JUNIOR LEAGUE

Monarchs 21 Rockers 12
The Monarchs have consistently played solid defense all season, but scoring has been a struggle despite strong individual efforts each week.  Today the Monarchs broke through as they came together and played 24 minutes of team ball.  The scoring was even with Kayla VonKahle (6 Points), Shaylee Puleo (7 Points), Sarah Murray (6 Points), and Alicia Moore (2 Points) all contributing to the offensive tally.  Guards Sarah Ciampa and Emily Amaral did an outstanding job setting up the offense and pressuring the Rockers ball handlers on defense.  Sidney Quinn and Tayla Spezzano were strong on the boards along with teammate Erin Briley.  The Monarchs played heads up ball making great passes and creating solid scoring chances.  This was truly a team victory against an established Rockers team.

Julia Kelly led the Rockers in scoring with 5 points.  Erica Wynott was behind her with 3 points.  Amy Glover and Lizzie Markwarth started the first quarter off strong with a beautiful breakaway play, each putting up 2 more points.  Sara Constantino had a beautiful rebound.  Sara Bishop executed a very nice play.  Hannah Maffeo got involved offensively getting robbed of a beautiful shot.  Nicole Cobuccio had her fancy dribble on.  Great job bringing the ball up! Amy Glover had fast feet on “D”, stopping the ball several times up top. Jackie Marchant had some hands up defense.  Rockers lost steam in the 3rd, played hard in the 4th, but not enough for the win.

lynx 14 mystics 13

In a very close game the lynx pulled out a victory 14-13 vs. the mystics. The Mystics came out on fire with 8-0 lead. The Lynx came back to a 14-10 lead late in the 4th quarter. Then the mystics made a basket and hit a free throw with 18 seconds left in the game to pull within 1. The Lynx then made a steal with 6 seconds left to seal the victory. Lynx leading scorers were Amanda Mckinnis 5pts, Carolyn Versackas 3pts, Sarah Larsen and Amanda Ford 2pts each, and Katie Garcia & Rebecca Lewis 1pt each.

The Mystics lost a tough game today against the Lynx. In the 1st quarter they put up 16 shots but only 3 landed and took a 6-0 lead going into the 2nd. Natalie Veloz was incredible all around, playing her best game of her young career scoring her season high of 11 points. Michelle Maciel also did a great job chipping in 2 more. The difference in this game was the fouls. We gave the Lynx way too many chances to climb back into this one. All the credit goes to them for taking advantage of there free throw opportunities by sinking 6 out of 7 on the day. The good thing for the Mystics is that we can and will clean up our Defense and stop reaching in. Vicky Horton really has turned the corner lately and is starting to contribute with steals, deflections and shooting the ball. She is becoming a big contibutor on the Mystics and we will need more of that as we wind down the regular season and get ready for the tournament.

 Sparks 20 Comets 4

Today the Comets Team made many great passes throughout the game, trying to score some hoops.  Emily Burns netted two points for the Comets in the second quarter with the assist by Caitlin Panessiti and Carla Tenaglia, who also grabbed some rebounds during the quarter.  Allison Couillard did a great job pushing the ball up court and Michaela Svendsen had some good bounce passes during the game.  In the third quarter, Julia Noone sank one for two points after receiving a pass from Emily Milne.  Olivia Powers got in on the action with some rebounds and tough defense.  Michelle Tenaglia was a strong defender with many steals and Emily Langone, defensive player of the game, shined on both ends of the court aggressively going after the ball and driving to the net.

Scoring for the Sparks were Francesca Cocca with 10 points, Adrianna Favreau and Sarah Sullivan with 4 points apiece, and Emily Zuraski with 2 points.

STORM 16 MERCURY 6

The Storm came out on top of the Mercury after a hard fought battle.  Emily Walker, Alexis Brincklow and Lauren Riccardi all scored one basket each for the Mercury.  Julie Ozek, Felicia Ragucci and Teagan Trant all gave a great effort on defense.  Ashley Turri had some nice passes to her teammates during the game.  Danielle Carrig had a lot of nice shots but the ball just would not go in for her.  The Storm ended up winning the contest 16 to 6.

Scoring for the Storm were Kendyll Spinelli and Nicole Lucia with 6 points each, and Jessica Cacciola and Sydney Burlamchi with 2 points each.

LIBERTY 6 STARZZ 4

The Liberty played against a tough Starzz but was able to squeak by with a win of 6 to 4.  This game was a battle between evenly matched teams who both played a tough defense.  Scoring for Liberty was Victoria Mirabito 2 pts, Lily Wyatt 2 pts and Cassia Burns (2pts) with a shot at three point range and landed nothing but net.  Liberty's guards Gina Puccia, Niahm Cote, Jocelyn Stavros and Paige McGaffigan did an amazing job creating the first line of defense, applying the pressure and didn't let up.  Lisa Devito, and Mirabito were great under the boards both coming out of position to trap the player.  Mirabito was able to stop several passes by the Starzz.  Sara Cantazano was amazing on defense by covering the middle and not allowing the other teams any easy open shots.  It was a hard fought game and 100% effort by each member of Liberty.  Congratulations girls for another win!

Despite being shorthanded, the Starzz gave a great all around effort against the undefeated Liberty.  The Starzz played outstanding team defense throughout the game and had their chances on offense, but just couldn’t get the baskets to fall.  Emily Sessa was the only one who was able to score and finished with 4 points.  Holly Covel, Jordyn Cavicchi, Rachel Figucia, Rachel Sessa, Samantha Suroweic, Isabelle Picher and Haley Marchant all dug down deep on defense and held the Liberty to only 3 baskets.  The girls should be proud of the way they came together and almost pulled out a win despite being undermanned.  Isabelle Picher was named defensive player of the game.

INTERMEDIATE LEAGUE

Terriers 22 Jayhawks 20

The Terriers against the Jayhawks was another battle royale.  The Jayhawks have one of the toughest press and half court defenses in the league and they let the Terriers know it.  They kept the Terriers offense to ten points in the first three quarters.  But in the end the Jayhawks could not keep Shannon Smith out of the paint.  Shannon put in 12 points under the boards and 2 from the foul line.  Michelle Creedon also had a great inside game scoring 6 from underneath.  Marissa Conlin hit nothing but net for 2 from the top of the paint. The Jayhawks also saw their fair share of great defense since the Terriers were pouring it on, too.  Defensive players of the game Emily Duquette and Erin Walsh were going after any ball in their area.  Emily pulled down a number of key rebounds and Erin stopped numerous breakaways and caused a lot of jump balls.  Playing incredible defense were Melanie Fleury, Meagan Timmins, Ashley Colarusso, and Meredith Cahill.  The defense was a team effort though and it was key that not only the second and fourth quarter squad kept the Jayhawks to 4 in each quarter.  What was equally as important was that the third quarter squad kept them to only 5 points.  It was a great defensive game played by both teams.

The Jayhawks were back this week against their tough competitor, the Terriers. This was a great game with solid play by both teams, and a joy to watch.  Scoring was led off for the Jayhawks by Samantha Powers and followed up by Haley Pozzutto, Nicole Petherbridge (defensive player of the game), Ashley Colbert, and Meghan Braciska.  The Terriers kept the Jayhawks hustling, and the girls gave it their all.  Samantha Powers did a great job being pressed into service as a center.  Meghan Braciska played strong defense and offense giving her all to try to hold the Terriers off from scoring. But in the final three minutes, the Terriers were able to make a comeback in this nail biter of a game, and take the win. We couldn't be prouder of the girls, and look for the same great effort next week

WILDCATS 26 COUGARS 23

The Wildcats came out strong.  Lindsey Cossar had a beautiful breakaway and then a second breakaway sliding a sweet pass to Colleen Kelly.  Erin Davis had several blocks and 4 points. Excellent defensive play by Colleen and Ally Kelly, with many steals.  Inbounding became difficult with the full court press but the girls worked fantastic together getting the ball down the court.  Lindsey, Ally, Colleen and Corrine Doyle moved fast to get open.  Audrey Casey not only played an excellent defensive game, but also became a key player inbounding the ball and had a fantastic passing game.  Katie Dunleavy held her own in the 3rd, scoring 6 points and took charge under the hoop.  Lastly, Erica Dirk played a super hard game on defense, defending the threatening players and stopping the ball from going up.  Holy Cow Wildcats! Fabulous game!  Corinne and Colleen with 2 points, Ally and Erin with 4 points, Katie Dunleavy with 6 points, and Lindsey Cossar with the highs score of 8.  Although defense was stellar throughout, Erin Davis was defensive player of the game.

The Cougars played one of their best games this year and came up just short against a tough Wildcat squad.  Caleigh Finneral (8 pts) and Jamie Ray (5 pts) led the Cougar's in scoring both having outstanding all around games.  Molly Harrington (4 pts), Chelsea Grant (2 pts) and Delaney Chisholm (2 pt) each played great applying tremendous pressure on defense.  Samantha Teague and Sarah Baptista worked hard with great hustle all game coming down with some key rebounds.  Mary Crowe (2 pts) and Amanda Lane ran the court all game coming up with a couple steals each.  Jessica Lehmann was the defensive player of the game.  The Cougars came out hard in this game with the focus on defense and played one of their best games.

HUSKIES 26 CARDINALS 19

The Cardinals and Huskies had another close 2nd meeting.  Kenzi Wyatt played another great all around game, and started the Huskies out fast, along with Dimple Ghandi who was all over the court. The guard tandem of Marina Russo and Stephanie McHatton played great defense and made some great plays. Alyssa Defruscia and Karalyn Gallela carried the 2nd half and scored and hustled.  Jaime Fowler has improved every game, did a great a job rebounding and was named defensive player of the game.  Alyssa Defruscia was high scorer with 10 points.

The Cardinals and Huskies met for the second time this season resulting in another hard fought game where the Huskies were able to come away with the win. The first game the Huskies were able to jump out to a big early lead and coast to the four point win. This time it was a back and forth battle for the entire first half. Then in the second half, the Huskies were able to build a small lead after three quarters. In the fourth the Huskies were able to extend their lead and play good defense holding the Cardinals to only one point in the fourth. The Cardinals all fought very hard for the whole game and many players were able to steal the ball many times with Toni Joy (4) leading the way. Toni was the defensive player of the game. Kayla Berube led the team with 10 rebounds (many on the offensive end). Scoring for the Cardinals were Arianna Calouro, Nicole Doucette, and Emily Velozo with 4, Toni with 3, Kayla Berube with 2, and Eva Barinelli and Taylor Donahoe with 1. Hopefully 3rd time will be a charm for the Cardinals when they meet the Huskies in the playoffs.

WAVES 20 FALCONS 11

The Waves pulled out a win against the Falcons who were explosive in the the 4th quarter.  Christina Noyes and Tayla Legrand were tough underneath, while Catherine Ozek, Kirsten Dick and Melissa Markwarth got the offense flowing with some great passes.  Scoring for the Waves were Carlye Slavin with 8 points, Lexi Chaet with 6 points and Mariah Wentzell with 4 points.  Jackie Noftle was named defensive player of the game.

Scoring for the Falcons were Marissa Maciel with 6 points and Hillary Fletcher with 5 points.

SENIOR LEAGUE

Wizards 33 BLAZERS 31

The Wizards pulled out an exciting 33-31 victory over a very tough Blazers team.  Sam Laferriere (6 pts) scored the winning basket with 6 seconds left to play.  On this day, the offense went through Jen Iannacci as she was able to parlay her height advantage into a 17 point explosion.  Missy Cordwell (8 pts) and Abby Donoghue (2 pts) rounded out the scoring for the Wizards.  Jen Cobuccio was the unsung hero as she used her speed and quickness to play intense defense and to keep several loose balls alive including a game-saving play that led to the winning score.  Mariah Culwell, Hannah Culwell, Julia Bodoni, Jen Maddaleni, Jen Joyce and Sarah Barnes all did a fantastic job on defense to help limit the terrific outside shooting of the Blazers when it mattered most.

The Blazers and Wizards played an excellent game with the Blazers coming up just short.  Blazers were down early but came back to make it come close to the wire.  Tiffany Marsh led the Blazers scoring with 13 points, Bridget Casey, Brooke Patterson, Crystal Lemus, and Mikayla Hodgdon chipped in with 4 points each.  Ally Braciska had 2 points with some great defense on key players.  Sarah Minichello and Samantha Madore also were very tough defensively.  Another great effort from a very tough Blazers squad!

Jazz 25 Sonics 22

A short handed Jazz team came up with a tough win against a very good Sonics team. With only six players, the girls had to log a lot of minutes. Aly Spenser, Rachel Ragucci and Jen Salvucci  played tough defense and battled for rebounds all game. Sara Semenza lead the offense with 13pts, while Shannon Semenza chipped in with 8pts. Haley Feingold scored 4pts, including 2 big free throws down the stretch.

The Sonics suffered their third loss of the season to the Jazz with a final score of 22 to 25.  Marisa Harrington, Erin Morrissey, Christine Kang and Tessa Wyatt provided the Sonics with great defense. Shanna Chartientz (6 pts) and Melissa Peters (6pts) as always controlled both sides of the court. Brittney Pachucki (2 pts) dropped a great outside shot to keep the Sonics in the game. Jullian Phaneuf  (4 pts) played a very solid game and was able to control the boards on both sides of the court.

 Raptors 25 Spurs 24
Scoring for the Raptors were Nicole Chaet (16 pts) Caitlin Ludka (5 pts) Linda Ferreria ( 3 pts) and Catie Loiselle (1 pt). Defensive Players of the game were Nicole Chaet, Caitlin Ludka, Linda Ferreria, Catherine Loiselle, Rachel Eatherton & Kaitlin Fitzgerald.  Double Over-Time, what an exceptional game!  Both teams were short handed, and played quite a defensive game.  At 1/2 time the Raptors were losing 9-6.  The Raptors came back strong and were able to cover and defend what the Spurs were handing out.  The Spurs are a great team and gave the Raptors a run for our money.  Good game girls.

The SPURS team played a very exciting game and their fans were cheering them on until the final buzzer. Although again missing that elusive first win the girls put on quite a show and took the game into a double overtime. Defensively, Leanne Lozowski, Danielle Moulton, Shannon McLaughlin and Erin Elliott did a terrific job keeping the offense from getting any position under the boards. Devin Kelly and Jamie Cohen played great in the guard position and assisted on many baskets. Rachel Pendleton hit some nice outside shots and free throws to lead the team in scoring (14pts) with Shannon McLaughlin (8) and Erin Elliott (2). A fun game for the SPURS to be proud of.

MAGIC 25 PACERS 17

The Magic jumped out to a fast start playing well on both ends of the court, scoring 10 in the first quarter and only allowing 2.  The momentum continued into a 15 to 4 half time lead.  The Pacers closed the gap in the 3rd, but the Magic, led by Shanel Nardone (11pts.) and Nicole Hamel, pulled away in the 4th quarter for a nice team win.

Scoring for the Pacers were Caitlin Morris (12 pts.), Mackenzie Pierce (2 pts.), Paige Walker (2 pts.) and Ellen Wollds (1 pt).

5TH GRADE TRAVEL

Melrose 14  Tewksbury 11

As is typical for the 5th grade travel team they allowed their opponent to control the tempo of the game and started out, once again, downhill.  Melrose came to town on Sunday looking for revenge after Tewksbury stole a win away from them in overtime last week.  The Redmen allowed Melrose to push them around and the Red Raiders came up with every loose ball and pounded the offensive boards.  The Red Raiders also ran the floor well as the Redmen seemed to be running at a different speed.  Luckily for Tewksbury, Melrose was not shooting well and the first half ended with the score just 5-0.  The Redmen didn’t score a point until Sara Catanzano (7 pts) stepped to the line and sunk one of her free throws to finally put Tewksbury on the board.  The Redmen slowly came alive sparked by their second half defense led by Katie Garcia, Samantha Surowiec, Emily Sessa, Catanzano, and Victoria Mirabito.  Marissa Doherty, Paige McGaffigan, and Francesca Cocca all tried to spark the team but four more minutes went by before Tewksbury would score their first bucket of the game.  As time was winding down and there were just 3 minutes left in the game Adrianna Favreau (4pts), Sessa, Samantha Mercurio, Garcia, and Catanzano buckled down to bring the Redmen to within 4 points.  The Red Raiders broke the full court press easily and brought their lead back up to 6 points but the Redmen did not give up and got the lead down to just four.   Favreau attacked the basket and was rewarded with two foul shots. She sank one to bring Tewksbury within three points.  The Redmen defense did their job by stealing the ball but their offense could not capitalize on the easy shots as time started to move too fast off the clock. Mercurio stepped to the line with just seconds remaining to try and bring them within one point but she missed both her free throws and the Redmen had to keep fighting.  Melrose had their chances to pull away with the lead but they too were struggling from the line so the game remained close right up until the buzzer sounded. The only way Tewksbury was going to win was with a desperation 3 point shot but time ran out and they lost this uphill battle 14-11.  Next week the girls will face undefeated Billerica and a very hungry North Reading team.
