In Opening of TGBL the Starzz and Sparks do not disappoint the fans

 

Jr. Division

 

STARZZ vs. SPARKS  12-12

The Starzz battled back from a 12-4 deficeit with under two minutes left in the game to force overtime.  A big basket by Eva Barinelli, 6 pts., Molly Robertson, 4 pts., and Loren Sullivan, 2 pts. led the furious comeback.  Great team defensive by Amanda Aylward, Emily Duquette and defensive player of the game Erin Henry kept the Starzz in the game.  Stephanie Deluca-Gifford chippend in with good rebounding in the overtime. 

This was a great game to watch.  Both teams fought to the very end.  Scoring was by Estelle Penta, 2 pts., Marissa Mariel, 4 pts., Megan Timmins, 2 pts., and Chelsea Grant 2 pts.  Great defensive play by Sara Baptisti, Samantha Lopolito, June Garcia, Francesca Cocca and Maddy Burgoyne.  The Sparks were ahead most of the game, but towards the end the ball would not go in.  What an exciting first game of the season. 

 

COMETS vs. STORM   12-9

In the first outing of the season the comets had a great team effort.  Scoring fot the Comets were Jessica Guida, 8pts. and Rebecca Keough, 4 pts.  Defensive players of the game were Kirsten Dick and Cassandra Froio.

It was a very exciting game for the Storm and the Comets for the first game.  Both teams played a very good defensive game.  Scoring for the Storm were Erika Dirk, 5pts.,Taylor Donahoe, 2 pts. and Nora Butler, 2 pts.  Caitlin Carroll, Taylor Donahoe, Caleigh Finneral, Colleen Waite, Niki Doucette, Erin Davis, Erica Dirk and Nora Butler played very hard on defense.

 

ROCKERS vs. MONARCHS   16-14

Excellent playing by all the girls! Newcomers Heather Doyle, Melissa Marksworth and Katie Dunlevy came out with everything.  Awesome defense.  Meredith Cahill was like a bullet speeding around the court.  Corinne Doyle had great passing and defensive.  Christina Gath great hands up on defense.  Colleen Kelly, 2 pts., displayed great speed and hands up.  Haley Pozzuto and Alyssa DiFruscia, 14 pts.- WOW, awesome rebounding and quick hands.  Team work was outstanding. Defensive player of the game was Haley Pozzuto.

The Monarchs scored 14 pts. to keep this game very close.

 

LYNX vs. MERCURY  16-7

The Lynx kicked off the season with a close win over a tough Mercury.  Amanda Brown,6pts., and Ally Kelly, 6 pts., led the fast break attack.  Kayla Berube and Toni Joy chipped in with 2 pts. each.  Shannon Smith was a force on the boards and was named defensive player.  Delaney Chisolm, Emily Velsoso, Andrea Dorin all played aggressive deense to help seal the win.

The Mercury girls hustled the entire game and excellent passing was done by:  Sandra Fleming, Lindsey Cossar, and Brittany Fletcher.  Karalyn Gallella, Hillary Fletcher and Lisa Petrowski did a great job rebounding.  Scoring for the Mercury were Lauren Strong, 6pts., and Ashley Colarusso, 1 pt.

 

Intermediate Division

 

CRUSADERS vs. FALCONS  20-11

The Crusaders played a great defensive game.  Devin Kelly shut done the Falcon guards and was named defensive player of the game.  Meaghan McLaughlin arrived in time for the fourth quarter and put up 8 pts. to lead the Crusaders.  Also scoring for the Crusaders were Jillian Phaneuf, 6 pts., Meghan Sears, 4 pts., and Mackenzie Carr, 2 pts.

The Falcons had a great team effort and had the lead 11-8 going into the fourth quarter.  Some nice drives by the Crusaders enabled the to win.  Scoring for the Falcons were Ali Braciska 5 pts., Kelly Quigley 4 pts., and Crystal Lemus 2 pts.  Rachel Eatherton and Kelsey Damp were named defensive players of the game.  Strong rebounding led by Zoe Zietek and Jen Joyce had some great shot attempts.

 

JAYHAWKS vs. HUSKIES  17-16

Jayhawks opened the season with a win led by Caitlin Morris 8 pts., Bridget Casey 5 pts., Brooke Patterson 2 pts. and Mackenzie Pierce 2 pts.  A very strong game led by defensive player of the game, Kevita Shah, assisted on defense by Leanne Lozowski and Stacy Crowe.  Outstanding rebounds by Dana Chaykovsky and Kavita Shah.

The Huskies faced a tough Jayhawks team.  Play was back and forth all game. Defensive standouts were Tessa Wyatts and Sara Semenza who was named defensive player of the game.  Laura Dooley and Shannon Semenza paced the offensive with 4 pts. eachExcellent team effort overall by Sarah Barnes, Abby Meuse and Erin Morrissey.  Britney Sullivan chipped in with 2 pts. and Ashley Pozzuto was all over the defensive boards.

 

WOLVERINES vs. WAVES  29-20

The Wolverines led by Stephanie Champoux 12 pts. and Shanell Nardone 4 pts. on offense, balanced their attack through four quarters.  Exceptional defense was turned in by all the ladies, especially Katrina Dustin who was named defensive player of the game.  Aslo scoring for the Wolverines was Jen Salvucci 4 pts. and Christine Kang 4 pts.

Rebounding by Hayley Feingold and Kimberly Brekalis kept the Waves in the game.  Scoring for the Waves were Allie Tierney 8 pts., Tiffanie Marsh 6 pts., Kimberly Brekalis 2 pts., Paige Walker 2 pts., and Hayley Feingold 2 pts.

 

COUGARS vs. CARDINALS  27-8

A well played and balanced attack by the Cougars to open the season against a tough Cardinals team.  High scorer for the Cougars was Meagan Blaisdell 8 pts., followed by Michelle Hopkinson and Melissa Mackey with 6 pts. each.  Rounding out the scoring was Samantha Campbell 4 pts. and Kaitlyn Gordon with 3 pts.  This was a total team effort assisted by Allie Christopher, Jen Cawley, Jennifer Maddaleni, Ashlee and Britnee Dell'Arciprete.  Melissa Mackey was named defensive player of the game.

Scoring for the Cardinals were Haley Acconcia 4 pts., Jamie Cohen 2pts. and Mikayla Hodgdon 2 pts.

 

TARHEELS vs. TERRIERS  17-12

The Tarheels opened the season with a victory over the Terriers.  The team only had 5 players for this contest but the girls responded with a solid effort and they showed a lot of determination to fight throught the fatigue and finish the job.  Josie Saiz led the charge with an impressive 11 pts. and great all around hustle.  Gabrielle Mecherkany contributed 4 pts., Julia Bodoni 2 pts., and Anna Piccolo 2 pts.  Megan Sheppard did a remendous job on defense and moved the ball well up and down the floor.  Both teams battled hard in this well played contest.

Scoring for the Terriers were Arianna Medeiros 10 pts., and Christina Fernandez 2 pts.

 

EAGLES vs. WILDCATS   32-14

Scoring for the Eagles were Nicole Chaet and Nicole DePierro 8 pts. each, Hanna Culwell 6 pts., Marisa Harrington 4 pts., and Nicole Hamel 2 pts.

Scoring for the Wildcats were Haley Golini and Ashley Kelly 4 pts. each, Linda Ferreira, Emily Hamilton, and Rachel Kelliher.

 

SENIOR DIVISON

 

WIZARDS vs. PACERS   38-23

The Wizards had a great all-around team effort, stellar team defense and excellent passing.    Scoring for the Wizards were Allyson Trayah 10 pts., Amanda Fleming 7 pts., Christina Lusardi 6 pts., and Meghan Ashley 4 pts.  Kim Fairweather, Nicole McColgan and Christina Lusardi were named defensive players of the game. 

In the first half it was a defensive balltle with the Wizards pulling away slightly at the end of the second quarter.  The second half the Wizards pulled away and won.  Both teams played hard and are to be commended.  Scoring for the Wizards were Amy DeFrancesco 6 pts., Andrea Hardy 5 pts., Alichia Cordeiro and Courtney Downing 4 pts., and Christine Dick with 2 pts.  Alexandra Remigio was named defensive player of the game.

 

SONICS vs. SPURS  29-22

The Sonics really had to push it to take this win from the Spurs.  Lauren Teixeira led her squad with 7 pts. with Liz Carie right behind her with 6 pts.  The rest of the offense  was supported by Jen Bowers 4 pts., Krista Petrone 4 pts. and Renee Conlin, Stacy Matranga, Lauren Spencer and Courtney Spinelli all contributed a bucket.  Everyone had their hands in the defense led by Renee Conlin and Courtney Spinelli, both named defensive players of the game and assisted by Alyssa Guida and Katie Conklin.  Overall a great game played by both teams. 

The Spurs were down players so all players had to play three quarters.  They hung in there to the very end but they got tired.  Sheri Liggiero was a force on offense.  Scoring for the Spurs were Jessie Bissett 6 pts., Hayley Malone 6 pts., Sheri Liggiero 6 pts., Sydnie Lopolito 2 pts. and Emily Giuliani 2 pts.  Erin Plunkett and Emily Hartigan were named defensive players of the game.

 

MAGIC vs. RAPTORS   14-8

A great team defense led the Magic to victory.  Key offense, rebounding by Stephanie Evangelista and Jamie Flynn led to several second chance shots.  Overall great team work.  Scoring for the Magic were Brooke Mallahan 4 pts., Nicole Devoe 3 pts., and Taylor Marshall.

A shorthanded Raptors team with 6 players had a spirited game with the defending champions of the Senior league.  The lead was traded back and forth through the firs 3 quarters until the Raptors lost two players to fouls and had to play the last 2 minutes with only 4 players.  Both teams played excellent defense and the offenses, as expected this early in the season seemed to struggle on both sides of the floor.  The scoring was balanced between Andrea Caprio, Emily Fugate, Colleen Garey and Shannon Shikles whom all scored 2 pts.  Ayssa Kelly played an excellent defensive game as she had the responsibility to shut down the Magic's Taylor Marshall, one of the top offensive players in the Senior league. 

 

BLAZERS vs. JAZZ  28-16

This was a good start for us.  Both teams were working the ball very well both on offense and defense.  High scores of the game were Kaylyn Michaud 7 pts.,  Francesca Pesantes 6 pts., Michelle Gavin 5 pts., Maggie Middleton and Stephanie Casino 4pts. each and Brooke Litwinsky with 2 pts.  Defensive players of the game were Michelle Gavin and Brooke Litwinsky.

Scoring  for the Jazz were Hayley Austin 7 pts., Shelby Madore 4 pts., Shiana Licker and Sarah Hogan 2 pts. each, and Rachel Hurton with 1 pt.
