TGBL PUBLICITY WEEK 1      11/21/09

JUNIOR LEAGUE-

LIBERTY 22  MERCURY 10  

The Liberty started the season against the Mercury and clinched their first win 22 to 10. Shannon Vasas earned the Liberty 8 points.  Also adding to the score was Niamh Cote (4), Gina Puccia (4),                  Jocelyn Stavros (2) and Lily Wyatt (4).  Contributing on defense, Cote stole the ball half a dozen times while Puccia and Vasas double teamed to gain possession.  Lisa DeVito played excellent defense and was able to assist in holding off the Mercury.  Gigi Frisella also assisted her team on defense and was able to grab many rebounds.  Liberty was down four players and came together demonstrating what good team work can do.  Niamh Cote was named defensive player of the game. Congratulations!

Scoring for the Mercury were Kiley Barrett with 4 points, Emily Walker, Alexis Brincklow, and Teagan Trant  with 2 points apiece.

MONARCHS 16  COMETS 8

The Comets season opener was against the Monarchs. Julia Noone hit the scoreboard with the teams first two points, followed by Allison Couillard, Emily Langone and Emily Burns all with two points a piece.  The Comets defense was alive and kicking with Allison Couillard and Olivia Powers showing lots of aggressive moves up and down the court keeping the Monarchs on their toes. Allison Couillard was named defensive player of the game.  All of the girls on the Comets worked great together as a team and deserve lots of praise for all of their effort and hard work.  Great job Comets!

Scoring for the Monarchs were Shaylee Puleo with 6 points, Kayla VonKahle with 4 points and

Sidney Quinn, Sarah Ciampa and Tayla Spezzano with 2 points apiece.

STORM 20 MYSTICS 6

The Storm had a total team effort in victory.  Balanced scoring from Sydney Burlamachi (6), Madison Wescott (4), Jessica Cacciola (4) Kendyll Spinelli (2) and Nicole Lucia (2) led the way.  Ferocious defense from Sarah Yoken, Shaele Esteveo, Stefani Cunningham, Irene Houde, Bailey Carter, and defensive player of the game Stephanie Graffeo.

Scoring for the Mystics were Natalie Veloz with 4 and Maggie Penta with 2.

STARZZ 18 ROCKERS 2

The Starzz opened up the season against a solid Rockers team.  Defense led the way for the Starzz in this one, with strong defensive efforts from Isabelle Picher, Holly Covel, Kate McGlaughlin (2), Rachel Figucia, Samantha Surowiec and Jordyn Cavicchi (2).  Samantha Mercurio got the offense going in the second half, scoring 12 points off the bench.  Haley Marchant (2) controlled the boards throughout the game and was named the DefensivePlayer of the Game.

Tough start for the Rockers but what a great effort!  Julia Kelly scored 2 points.  Erica Wynott, Lizzie Markwarth, and Nicole Cobuccio had a great offensize game.  There were some nice looks by the girls and some close shots.  Amy Glover and Tatum Pecci did a fabulous job taking the ball up court and super fast feet on D.  Sara Letourneau, Jackie Marchant, and Hannah Maffeo did a great job under the basket - giving some fight for those rebounds!! Last but certainly not least Sara Bishop and Sara Constantino showed great potential on both offense and defense - always willing to give 100%. 

 

SPARKS 23 LYNX 20

In a tightly contested high scoring affair the Sparks edged the Lynx 23-20. Down 23-12 with 5 minutes left in the 4th quarter the Lynx scored 6 unanswered points. Then the Sparks held the Lynx scoreless until Sarah Larsen hit 2 free throws with 7 seconds left to bring the Lynx within 3. The Sparks ran out the remainder of the clock and came away with the victory. Scoring for the Lynx were Carolyn Verseckas 6pts, Katie Garcia, Rebecca Lewis, and Kylie Paulina 4pts, and Sarah Larsen 2pts.

Defensive player of the week was Miranda Hulme

Scoring for Sparks were Adrianna Favreau 17, Sarah Sullivan 4, and Rebekah Politis 2.

INTERMEDIATE LEAGUE

CARDINALS 28 WAVES 13
The Cardinals came out strong against the Waves.  Kayla Berube, Caitlin
Carroll, Taylor Donahoe and Ashley Figucia played aggressive defense and
did a great job rebounding for the Cardinals.  Arianna Calouro, Caroline Ferrari, Sam Lopolito, Eva Barinelli  and Emily Veloz came out strong with good hustle and did extremely well with good
passing and came through for the Cardinals with fast break plays that pulled the Cardinals ahead to win the game. Toni Joy was named defensive player of the game and high scorers were Toni Joy (7) and    Eva Barinelli (6).  It was a very exciting game between both teams.  They both played extremely well seeing it was the first game of the season

Carlye Slavin (9) and Alexis Chaet(4)  led the Waves offensive charge but it wasn’t enough to fend off a tough Cardinals team.  Tayla Legrande was the Waves defensive standout.

 TERRIERS 35 COUGARS 19

The Terriers had their hands full with a tough Cougars team.  .It was the Terriers tough defense that helped them get the win.  Ashley Colarusso and Erin Walsh set the tone with keeping the Cougars offense out of the key.  The defense was backed up with some great help and hustle from Melanie Fleury and Emily Duquette.  The Terrier's D caused numerous turnovers and grabbed lots of rebounds. Defensive players of the game were Erin Walsh / Ashley Colarusso.  Offensively Marissa Conlin was on fire scoring 16 points, 12 in the first quarter.  Shannon Smith ruled under the boards scoring 9, 6 in the paint and 3 at the foul line.  Amanda Brown was right behind her with 8 points and Meagan Timmins drained one for 2 points.  Every Terrier got at least two shots off so the whole team got some air time.  Both teams put in great efforts and put on a good show.

 The Cougars lost a tough battle to a very talented Terriers team.  Jamie Ray led the Cougars in scoring with 5 points.  Molly Harrington (4), Chelsea Grant (4) and Caleigh Finneral (4) each had very good games playing hard on defense and hitting the big shots throughout the game.  Amanda Lane (2), Mary Crowe, and Jessica Lehmann had outstanding games working very hard on both ends of the court.  Samantha Teague and Delaney Chisholm did a great job covering their players and hustling all game.  Sarah Baptista was a defensive standout in this game.  This was a very exciting game to get the Cougar's season kicked off.

 

 

 

 

 

 

HUSKIES 25  FALCONS 10

The Huskies opened up the year with a hard fought win over a scrappy Falcons squad.  Alysa DeFruscia (12pts) and Karalyn Gallela (8pts) were leading the way scoring along with _Kenzi Wyatt who scored and was all over the court.  Jamie Fowler and Chloe Politis also pitched in with baskets.  Fowler and Alyssa Rodigues also made some great passes on the fast break.  After halftime the Huskies tightened up defensively .  Marina Russo and Stephanie Mchatton played tough tough defense.  Samantha Parker got  several  rebounds along with DeFruscia.  The game was well played and ended with the Huskies pulling it out.

Scoring for the Falcons were Amanda Aylward, Lauren Strong, Hannah Benning, Hillary Fletcher, and Marissa Maciel, all with 2 points each.

JAYHAWKS 27  WILDCATS 11

After a great start last week at the Jamboree, the Jayhawks returned this week to play against a very quick Wildcats team. By half time, the score was 12-11, and it was anybody’s game with both teams playing strong. The Jayhawks tightened up their defense and stepped up their offense in the second half and held the Wildcats, while pulling away to a victory of 27-11 in a game where everyone contributed.  Loren Sullivan led the team in rebounds and scoring, followed by Meghan Braciska with strong drives to the hoop, and Rebecca Keough getting her first points of the season. June Garcia played excellent defense, and was always ready to box out to get the rebounds. Thanks to the Wildcats for a very well played game

Wildcats came out a bit slow but surely picked up by the mid 1st quarter and stirred up more the second.  Although the Wildcats did not end up on top - they did put forth a great effort.  Jessica Guida did fantastic under the boards, she fought for those rebounds like crazy - impressive!!  Heather Doyle, Corinne Doyle, Ally Kelly, Audrey Casey and Colleen Kelly were super fast on D, stopping several plays and taking possession of the ball.  Janina Kennedy and Erin Davis took over under the boards - did a nice job getting open and getting rebounds.  Katie Dunleavy and Lindsey Cossar did a great job keeping the defense under control and working hard against the press.  Erica Dirk took care under the hoop showing some great fight for the rebounds! 

 

SENIOR LEAGUE

 

WIZARDS 35 SPURS 30

 

The Wizards kicked off the season with a thrilling 35 - 30 overtime victory over a resilient and well-coached Spurs team.  Sam Laferriere was the offensive star totaling 17 points including a key 3-point play in OT.  Missy Cordwell (10 pts.) and Jen Iannacci (6 pts.) were dominant on the boards on both ends of the floor.  Also scoring were Jen Joyce (2 pts) and Jen Cobuccio who hit a nice outside jumper that was not allowed due to a clock malfunction.  Mariah Culwell, Julia Bodoni, Abby Donoghue, Sarah Barnes and Jen Maddaleni all played well defensively in the win.  Both teams turned in a solid effort and are to be congratulated for a well played game.

 

After a slow start and trailing in the first half of the game, the SPURs turned on all jets and quickly evened up the score. The SPURS overcame the height disadvantage with speed, pressing and great defense. Scoring for the Spurs... Shannon McLaughlin (8) pts, Rachel Pendleton (7), Kelsie Bradley (6), Meaghan McLaughlin (5), Jamie Cohen (2), and Danielle Moulton (2). Erin Eliott and Leanne Lozowski and Haley Golini played great defense to hold back the Wizards offense and denied them many opportunities under the boards. Although losing in Overtime (35-30) the SPURS played a fabulous game!

 

RAPTORS 31 BLAZERS 15

Scoring for the Raptors were Caitlin Ludka, 10 pts, Stephanie Champoux, 8 pts, Emily Knoops, 4 pts,                         Nicole Chaet, 3 pts, Ashley Pozutto, 2 pts, Meredith Bonugli, 2 pts, and Linda Fererria, 2 points.
Nicole Chaet was named defensive player of the game. This game was great.  The Raptors came out strong, and continued that way throughout the entire game.  Strong rebounding by Kaitlin Fitzgerald.  Strong defense by Catherine Loiselle.  All players came together and showed that they can score and play great.

High Scorers for the Blazers were Tiffany Marsh  (7 points), Bridget Casey (2 points), Taylor Simas (2 points), Samantha Madore (2 points), and Mikayla Hodgdon (2 points).  Defensive player of the game was Aleska Pena.

 

JAZZ 37 PACERS 17

The Jazz opened up the season with a nice win against a tough Pacers team. The Jazz featured a balanced attack, as all eight players scored. The defense was lead by Haley Feingold and Samantha Campbell, holding the Pacers to 17pts. The offense was lead by Arianna Medeiros (10pts) and Shannon Semenza(10pts). Rounding out the scoring were Aly Spencer(5pts), Haley Callahan (4pts), Sara Semenza(4pts), Jen Salvucci(2pts), Haley Feingold(2pts), and Samantha Campbell(2pts).

Scoring for the Pacers were Caitlin Morris with 8 points, Adriana Brown 4 points,  and Haley Acconcia and Mackenzie Pierce with 2 points each.

SONICS 34 MAGIC 30

The Sonics were able to hold off a very solid Magic team to pull out their first win of the season with a final score of 34 to 30. Shana Chartientz (9 pts) was player of the game by controlling both sides of the court. Melissa Peters (7pts) and JIllian Phaneuf (4pts) were able to come up with several key baskets and helped control the tempo of the game. Erin Morrissey (6pts) and Tessa Wyatt (4pts)  were able to come up with several key baskets to keep the Sonics from losing momentum. Brittney Pachucki (4pts) and Marisa Harrington played a solid game on both sides of the court. 

A young Magic team took on a veteran Sonics team in their season opener, falling 34 to 30. The Magic played a good game, behind the whole game, but closing the deficient to 2 points with 33 seconds left. All the magic players made it into the scoring column, lead by Nicole Hamel with 9 points and some dominating inside play. Kelly Quigley had 6 points and provided a great spark in the 4th quarter with her outside shooting. Shanell Nardone had 4 points all from the free throw line and did a great job at the point running the offense. Meaghan Blaisdell also had 4 points and really dug in and played some great defense. Kertrina Dustin, Ashlee Dell'Arciprete, and Britnee Dell'Arciprete each had 2 points and played tough defense, usually on taller players. Olivia Gallella rounded out the scoring with 1 point, good defense and some much needed rebounding.
