CARDINALS 38 vs. COUGARS 22
The Cardinals put on an
impressive showing against a shorthanded Cougars squad to notch up their third
win of the season in a high scoring affair. The Cardinals passed the ball
better then they have all season and led to contributions from many of the 6th
graders. At the end of the first quarter the Cardinals led 4-2 on baskets by
Arianna Calouro and Emily Velozo.
In the second quarter the girls really got things going led by fast break
opportunities by Toni Joy and Nikki Doucette to build a 14 point halftime lead.
However in the second half the Cougars continued to battle and closed the gap
to 8 points early in the fourth quarter before the final charge by the
Cardinals. Strong defense in the third quarter by Caitlin Carroll, Eva Barinelli, and Samantha Lopolito
kept the Cougars on a leash. Sam even looked like a point guard taking the ball
down the court on the fast break once. Eva had many good looks at the basket
but the shots just didn’t fall for her today. Player of the game was Toni Joy
who in addition to her 14 points (7 for 8 shooting mostly on fast breaks) also
had four rebounds, 3 steals, and four assists. Most impressive was her ability
to find the open girl and make good passes. Defensive player of the game was
Emily Velozo with 4 steals and constant pressure.
Taylor Donahoe also chipped in defensively with 7
rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Scoring for the Cardinals in addition to Toni
were Nikki with 8, Ashley Figucia with 6, Taylor with
4, and Ari, Emily, and Caroline Ferrari with 2 points each. Caroline should
have had another basket but it appeared the Ghost of Christmas Present was
there to knock it out.

short against a tough Cardinals team. Caleigh Finneral led the Cougars
in scoring with 12 points. Molly Harrington(4)
and Delaney Chisholm played very well controlling the ball and setting up the offensnme. Amanda

Feingold lead the offense with 5pts. Rachel Ragucci, Samantha Campbell, and Abby Meuse played tough

to get past a very talented Wizards team to get their third win of the season

Sonics in the game in the first quarter. Melissa Peters had her best game of
the season with drive and determination to get to the basket she scored a team
high of 11 points. Shanna Chartientz (7 pts) played a very physical game against a
much taller team and was able to clinch the win at the foul line with half a
second left to play. Marisa Harrington, Krista Mignon and Erin Morrissey (2
pts) were able to keep the pressure on the Wizards thru three quarters of play.
Jillian Phaneuf continued to control the boards on
both sides of the court against a much taller Wizards line. Brittney Pachucki played a strong defensive game and was able to
make several key passes under the basket to help the team score.
Despite playing without two key players, the Wizards
put up a great fight but lost a heartbreaker 20-19 to the Sonics on a free
throw with less than a second to play. Sam Laferriere
was on fire scoring 14 points and playing outstanding defense. Hannah Culwell (1 pt) was a major force on the defensive end and
