5th GRADE TRAVEL

Andover           27                           Tewksbury      19

The Tewksbury Girls 5th grade travel team navigated their way to the Pike School in Andover Friday night to try and take one from the team that had just handed them their last loss of 2009.  Just a few short weeks ago these two teams paired off in a close game at the Wynn in which the Redmen came up short after a hard fought game.  Tewksbury came out flat in this game and didn’t take good care of the ball which allowed a good Andover team to capitalize and they jump out to an early lead.   Tewksbury could not seem to buy a basket in the first half while the Andover front court was dropping them in left and right.  Julia Kelly (4 pts), Sara Catanzano (4 pts), Sam Mercurio (1 pt), Katie Garcia (4 pts), Samantha Surowiec (2 pts) and Marissa Doherty (2 pts) all contributed to the point total.  Garcia led the way on the boards and played an excellent game.  Andover scored 19 first half points which left Tewksbury with a steep hill to climb in the second half.  A different Tewksbury team finally began to play with 4:06 seconds remaining in the game and the full team effort held Andover to just 8 second half points.  Adrianna Favreau, Francesca Cocca, Paige McGaffigan, and Victoria Mirabito played tough defense but the Redmen effort was too late.  Their second half defense made this an exciting game to watch but they ran out of time and the Redmen lost this one 27-19.

Tewksbury      22           Wilmington   18

Trying to get back to 500 was not going to be easy for the Tewksbury Girls 5th grade travel team as this road had to go through the Ryan School and a very good Wilmington Wildcat team.  The Redmen wanted this game for more than merely a win as the Wildcats handed them an excruciating, landslide of a defeat at the beginning of the season.  The gym was buzzing about this loss but the girls put it all behind them and came out aggressive and with something to prove.  Adrianna Favreau lead the scoring effort with 8 points, Samantha Mercurio added 6 points, Marissa Doherty 2 points, Emily Sessa with 4 points, and Sara Catanzano with 2 points all contributed to the offense.  The defense was lead by Victoria Mirabito who also led the team in blocked shots and rebounds.  The Redmen went in to half time with a 3 point lead and knew that their defense had got them there as this Wilmington team is bigger and has a great shooting front court but they were held to just 9 points.  Samantha Surowiec, Paige McGaffigan, Francesca Cocca, Katie Garcia, and Julia Kelly sparked the second half defense.  The gym began to fill up and the buzz got louder and louder that an upset was in order but once again the girls rose to the occasion and their defense stopped the Wildcat front court.  The game was drawing to end with just over a minute to play and Emily Sessa was rewarded 2 shots from the foul line.  The gym was quiet as Sessa sunk both shots under extreme pressure to put the Redmen up by 4 points.  That’s all the margin that was needed and Tewksbury won this exciting game 22-18.  Next week the team travels to Billerica to play an undefeated, first place team.
