JUNIOR LEAGUE
Mystics 12 Starzz 8
This was
quite a talented team we played this past Saturday in the Starzz,
there is a reason they started the season off 5-0. We came out ready to play
from the opening tip and put up alot of good shots
early, most of them didn't fall for us but we entered the 2nd quarter with a
3-1 lead thanks to strong play down low from Alexandra Bourassa. In the 2nd,
Marissa Doherty got us 2 more points due to her great ball
handling skills and her speed. Sam Alman is a
real force down low for us; she made a nice turnaround jumper and nailed it for
2. In the 3rd quarter, Alyssa Mercurio stole the ball
and went in for the nice jump shot from 10 feet with 2 defenders on her; she
banked it in for 2 pts. Vicky Horton made a great pass and found a
wide open Maggie Penta who sunk a 15 foot shot for 2
more. And Ali Bourassa finished the scoring for us with a free throw. We were
fortunate to have a 12-2 lead going into the 4th quarter but the Starzz weren't going away that easy, they chipped away and
got within 4 points of us but we managed to hold on for the win. We will
continue to practice very hard to improve and get ready for a talented Mercury
team next week. Defensive player of the game once again goes to the whole team,
these kids all put in the effort that got us this victory.
Scoring for
the Starzz were Emily Sessa (3 pts.) Isabelle Picher (2 pts.) Rachel
Sessa (2 pts.) and Jordyn Cavicchi (1 pt.)

6 pts.) Sarah Sullivan (4 pts.) Francesca Cocca (4
pts) Rebekah Politis (4 pts.) Adrianna Favreau (2 pts.) and Emily Zuraski
(1 pt.)
The Monarchs were off to a slow start in the defensive end
and spotted the Sparks twelve points in the first period before Emily Amaral drained two shots from the free throw line to put
the Monarchs on the board. The girls settled into their game and matched
up defensively for the rest of the game by holding the Sparks to only nine
points for the remaining three periods. Offensively they found many
chances and Emily Amaral scored two points from the
floor along with Tayla Spezzano. Kayla VonKahle added a point from the free throw line to finish
the scoring for the Monarchs but the real story was Kayla’s defensive
play. Kayla blocked a number of shots and was very tough on the boards
with fellow forward Sidney Quinn which kept the Monarchs within striking
distance throughout the game.

all played solid defense with many deflections and rebounds under the
net. Carla & Michelle Tenaglia, Emily Lagone and Allison Couillard all
made valiant attempts to push the ball up court and made many great attempts
for the hoop. Emily Milne and Julia Noone

INTERMEDIATE LEAGUE
Cardinals 22 vs. Wildcats 20 (in OT)
The Cardinals pulled out an
exciting game on Saturday in overtime on a last second bucket by Eva Barinelli. Defense was the key to the victory in this game
with many players contributing. Arianna Calouro
receives the defensive player of the game with her tenacity and 3 steals (5
overall) in the 2nd quarter alone. The Jayhawks came out with a
strong man-to-man defense that limited the Cardinals scoring. In a low scoring
first half that went back and forth, it ended with a 2 point lead for the
Cardinals. The 2nd half continued very much like the 1st
with the game staying tight. Tied with a few minutes left in the 3rd
the Cardinals put on a zone press which resulted in a 4 point lead as the quarter
ended. In the 4th quarter the lead was extended to 6 points twice at
18-12 and 20-14. However the Jayhawks were not through and employing a tough
man press was able to come back and tie the game with about a minute to go.
Down the stretch both teams had opportunities to win it but none were able to
find the bottom of the net and the game ended tied at 20. In overtime both
teams continued their strong defensive play and neither side was able to get a
good chance until late. Taylor Donahoe had a good try
that did not fall. Then with four seconds to play with the Jayhawks inbounding
the Cardinals stole the ball and passed to Eva. Eva streaked down the court
and, exhibiting great patience, put the lay-up off the glass and in as time
expired! Leading rebounders for the Cardinals were Kayla Berube
with 10 (Wow!), and Taylor Donahoe and Caitlin
Carroll with 4. Scoring were Eva with 6, Ari, Nikki Doucette, and Kayla with 4
each, and Emily Velozo and Caitlin with 2 each.
Nail biting game between the
Wildcats and Cardinals. Both teams came out strong and held their
own. Lindsey Cossar sunk 6 points, Erica Dirk,
Ally Kelly, and Colleen Kelly each put up 4, and Janina
Kennedy added another 2. Everyone played outstanding - Erin Davis stepped
up with several rebounds along with Lindsey, Erica, and Janina.
Defense was fierce with the speed of Corinne Doyle, Audrey Casey, Heather Doyle
(before becoming injured), Ally Kelly, and Colleen Kelly. Losing at the
buzzer, the Wildcats played with no reserve. Excellent job!!

breakaway lay-ups. The Terriers defense was spot on again. The defense
was led by Meredith Cahill and Meagan Timmins, both playing in their grill
D. Erin Walsh and Emily Duquette caused
numerous turnovers and also helped keep the Falcons from scoring. All in
all a well played game.
