The Spurs kept the Sonics on
their toes by making them work very hard for their win. Although a win
still eludes the Spurs they continue to play a very aggressive game both
offensively and defensively and have the 1st place teams biting their nails.
Leanne Lozowski, Jamie Cohen, Danielle Moulton, Devin
Kelly and Shannon McLaughlin got good position under the boards and denied
many opportunities for the Sonics. Erin Elliott played well moving the ball on

the third with three steals that she turned into six quick points.
Shannon Smith and Amanda Brown also teamed up in the second
and fourth to score 6 points each. Ashley Colarusso added four points to the board and Michelle Creedon scored two points in the paint.
The Terriers defense also kicked
into full gear in the second half, too. The defense was all about Meagan
Timmins in the first and third and Erin Walsh in the second and fourth
quarters. Meagan and Erin denied all access into the paint and were named
Defensive Players of the Game. The D was helped by Emily Duquette, Melanie Fleury, and
Meredith Cahill. The second half defense kept the Wildcats to two
points!!! Another great game!
Wildcats had a really great start to the game, taking on the fierce
Terriers. Corinne Doyle and Erin Davis both scored in the 1st quarter,
followed by Ally Kelly and Lindsey Cossar in the
second. Defense was well played by all but Janina
Kennedy get the gold star this week for taking on a tough competitor on the
Terriers and Audrey Casey had some sweet passes. Second half things
slowed for the Wildcats. Although Colleen Kelly and Erica Dirk still put
up a few points, it ended there. Katie Dunlevy
did a great job with a couple steals and some nice rebounding. Tough game. Hats off to the injured Heather Doyle who
did a great job scoring the game -
Cardinals
22 vs. Falcons 10
The Cardinals and Falcons
both began this game with fantastic defense. After the first the score was 5-2
and at half the score was 9-2. Scoring began when Arianna Calouro
made a good pass to Taylor Donahoe who then turned
and drained the jumper. Toni Joy was denied several times but continued to draw
the fouls which put her to the line to net 3 out of 6 free throws. In the third
quarter the fast break was working well for the Cardinals and they were able to
extend their 7 point lead. In the fourth quarter Ashley Figucia
got involved playing center and sinking a long jump shot. The second half of
the fourth the Falcons started dialing up the hustle and with many second
chance opportunities was able to put some points on the board for the final
score. Scoring for the Cardinals were Toni with 7, Arianna with 6, Ashley with
3, and Kayla Berube, Eva Barinelli,
and Taylor with 2 each. Toni also pulled down 9 rebounds playing some of her
time at forward.
Scoring for
the Falcons were Lauren Strong (4 pts.), Hillary Fletcher (2 pts.) and Marissa Maciel (2 pts.)
HUSKIES 20 WAVES 14
The Waves and Huskies played round two for the year
and it was another well played game. Alyssa
Defruscia was running the offense early and made some
great passes, yes passes. Samantha
Parker and Stephanie Mchatton hustled all over the
court early and Dimple Ghandi played outstanding
defense. In the second quarter the Huskies scoring tandem of Karalyn Gallela , Jamie Fowler and Kenzi
Wyatt took over. Marina Russo also
chipped in with a nice basket. In the
fourth Gallela sealed it with a driving layup after the Waves made a great
comeback.
The Waves gave the Huskies a great game but couldn’t
hold off the pack in a 20 to 14 loss.
High scorer for the Waves was Alexis Chaet with 6 points. Defensive player of the game was Jacqueline
Noftle.
JAYHAWKS 26 COUGARS 16
The Jayhawks were up
against the quick Cougars this week. Loren Sullivan and Megan Braciska were hitting their shots rising up the points on
the scoreboard for the Jayhawks.
The Cougars fell to a strong Jayhawks team in a well
played game. Caleigh
Finneral (7 pts) and Delaney Chisholm (6 pts) led the
Cougar's in scoring and each had great games.
Mary Crowe (2 pts) and Chelsea Grant (1 pt) each played very well making
some key hoops to keep it close. Jamie
Ray and Jessica Lehmann played well working hard at both ends of the
court. Samantha Teague and Amanda Lane
were strong under the basket grabbing several rebounds. Sarah Baptista was
the defensive player of the game. The
Cougars fell behind in this game, but showed great hustle in the final quarter
closing the gap and playing tremendous defense.
JUNIOR LEAGUE
Liberty 8 Mystics 4
The Liberty played a very tough game, but ultimately
won 8 to 4. The Liberty played hard defense and offense the entire
game. Doing double duty Gina Puccia and Niamh Cote both played 3 quarters due to being two players
down and did a great job. Paige McGaffigan,
Sara Cantazano, Cassia Burns and Lisa Devito all were great stopping the Mystics from gaining
momentum. Victoria Mirabito, Lily Wyatt, and Gigi Frisella applied great
defense. The team effort was what clinched this win. Scoring for
Liberty was Cassia Burns 4 pts, Sara Cantazano 2 pts,
and Paige McGaffigan 2pts.
Wow, What a
Battle!! Today we played against a high powered Offensive team in the
Liberty and held them to only 8 points. That's their lowest scoring output of
the season by far-- quite an accomplishment in itself. Our Defense played
unbelievable and laid it all on the line with everyone doing their jobs. We got
on the board first with Michelle Maciel nailing
2 and took a 2-0 lead going into the 2nd qtr. We were held scoreless by the
tough Liberty Defense until the 4th qtr when Sam Alman
got us 2 more with only 2 minutes left. Too little too late,
this time. We hope we will get another chance against them down the
road. For now we will concentrate on improving our Offense and keep pushing
forward till we get it right. We can't wait till next week. Good job
girls, we will get there.
SPARKS 14 MERCURY 2
The Mercury played a good defensive game against the
Sparks who average 17 points per game. Unfortunately, the game ended with
the Sparks winning 14 to 2. Alexis Brincklow
was the only Mercury player to score in the contest. Emily Walker, Kiley Barrett and Lauren Riccardi
all took some nice shots but the ball would not drop for any of them. The
guards of the Mercury (Felicia Ragucci, Julie Ozek and Ashley Turri) continue
to improve with aggressive defensive at the top of the key. Teagan Trant and Daniel Carrigg grabbed a number of key rebounds to keep the ball
game close going into the 4th quarter. Congratulations to a very
tough Sparks team.
Scoring for the Sparks were Adrianna Favreau (8 pts.),
Francesco Cocca (4 pts.) and Sarah Sullivan (2 pts.).
rockers 14 comets 6
Rockers had a fantastic game. They are really coming together
and playing well as a team. Julia Kelly led the scoring with 6 points,
Lizzie Markwarth with 4, and Amy Glover with 2. Sara Constantino
had a great rebound in the 3rd and Sara Bishop and Jackie Marchant
had some fury going after the ball. Hannah Maffeo
played some good hands up defense. Sara Letourneau stepped it up with a
few rebounds and a steal. Tatum Pecci and
Nicole Cobuccio did a fantastic job on D and did a
great job bringing the ball up the court.
Today
we had many more shots on net, but sadly they just didn't fall! Michaela Svendsen sunk 1 of 2 foul shots to get the Comets on the
board. Michelle Tenaglia sunk an impressive 3
of 4 foul shots and had a beautiful solo drive to the net for 2 more
points. Comets defense was sharp as Julia Noone,
Olivia Powers, Carla Tenaglia & Allison Couillard all deflected passes and pulled down some
rebounds. Caitlin Panessiti, Emily Burns, Emily
Milne and Emily Langone all hustled on the court
today playing solid defense with several steals and never let up the pressure
against a tough Rocker team. Defensive
Player of the game was Julia Noone.
STARZZ 18 STORM
10
The Storm
had a great 2nd half comeback but fell short to a tough Starzz team. The Storm’s cause was
helped by ferocious rebounding by Nicole Lucia and Stefani Cunningham and sharp
passing by Jessica Cacciola, Stephanie Graffeo, Bailey Carter and Irene Houde. Shaele Esteveo played outstanding defense. Scoring for the Storm were Madison Wescott (7
pts.) , Kendyl Spinelli (2pts.) and Nicole Lucia (1 pt.) Sarah Yoken was named defensive player of the game.
Scoring for
the Starzz were Emily Sessa,
Isabelle Picher, and Samantha Mercurio, all with 4
points each, and Samantha Surowiec, Rachel Sessa, and Jordyn Cavicchi, all with 2 points each.
LYNX 18 MONARCHS 6
high scorers for the Lynx were Katie
Garcia (6pts), Rebecca Lewis (4pts), Amanda Mckinnis (3pts), Emily Woods (2pts)
, Sarah Larsen(2pts) and Carolyn Verseckas (1 pt).Defensive Players Of The Game
were Amanda Ford, Lauren Crupi, And Miranda Hulme. A slow start to the game for both
teams had a low scoring first half. Then with 1 minute left in the 1st half the
Monarchs had pulled ahead with a 6-5 lead. From there the Lynx went on a 13-0
run with great defense. The Lynx now have gone 3-1 after a 1-3 start to pull to
.500.
The Monarchs played a very
talented Lynx team and put forth a very solid effort at both ends of the
court. Kayla VonKahle, Sidney Quinn, and Shaylee Puleo each had two points
in the first period. Kayla, Sidney, and Erin Briley
pulled down multiple rebounds and gave the Monarchs a lot of opportunities to
pull ahead. The offense put up many quality shots and second chances, but
the bounces seemed to be against the girls on Saturday and the Lynx managed to
pull away in the 4th period to secure the win. The Monarchs
defense, passing, and overall teamwork was impressive
and the score does not tell the story of how far these girls have come this
season.
5th GRADE TRAVEL
Tewksbury 22 Melrose 17
Victoria Mirabito’s timely
offense helped boost the 5th grade travel team to their first road
win of the season. The Redmen hit the road Wednesday night to Melrose needing a
win to start the second half of the season off right and that’s exactly what
they got. The game didn’t start out
promising as once again the girls came out flat and it seemed like the rim had
a cover on it. They were able to get
open shots just not get them in. Mirabito (7 pts) had her best game of the season and
sparked the offense in the first half.
She was open under the basket and sank 2 easy buckets to keep the Redmen in the game.
Sara Catanzano (3 pts) led the first half
defense with 7 blocked shots against her much taller opponents. Adrianna Favreau added 2 points from the line
and the Redmen went in to half time with an 11-8
deficit. This seemed like an easy hill
to climb compared to past weeks but Tewksbury continued to struggle in the
beginning of the second half but once again their defense was tough and kept
them in the game. As the clock began to
wind down something clicked for the Redmen and you
could feel the excitement building in the gym.
With the score now 17-10 the Redmen knew they
had to make a move soon or they were going to lose their 3rd game in
a row. Mirabito
stepped it up and drove to the basket and got the scoring going once
again. She was helped in the second half
by Samantha Mercurio (2 pts), Samantha Surowiec (2 pts), Julia Kelly (2 pts), Emily Sessa (2 pts) and Katie Garcia (2 pts). Mirabito’s 3rd
basket of the game was the turning point for Tewksbury and Melrose didn’t score
another point. The Redmen front court worked hard on
defense against Melrose’s good ball handlers. Francesca Cocca, Paige McGaffigan,
Mercurio, Sessa, and Surowiec were fighting through the screens and this was the
key to the Redmen success. With under a minute to go in the game Catanzano stepped confidently to the line and made 1 of her
2 free throws to tie the game. The Redmen held Melrose scoreless and the game went into
OT. The Redmen
never let up and the combination of Marissa Doherty who pestered the Melrose
guards all game long with Sessa. Mercurio,
Mirabito, and Catanzano
closed out the game leading the Redmen to a 22-17
exciting, overtime win. The team will
travel to Salem, NH on Saturday to try and sweep their opponents from the
Granite State.
Tewksbury 27 Salem, NH 26
Defense does it again for the Tewksbury girl’s 5th
grade travel team. The Redmen played another nail biter on Saturday but this time
their opponent was Salem, NH. As is
typical for this young team they came out slow in the first half and Salem
wanted to capitalize on this for their first win of the season. The first half scoring was led by Adrianna Favreau (4 pts),
Francesca Cocca (2 pts), Katie Garcia (2 pts) and Emily Sessa
(2 pts). Paige McGaffigan
tried to add to the first half scoring with 2 from the line after she was
fouled in the act of shooting but she wasn’t able to sink either. Tewksbury dominated the first half boards and
pulled down almost every rebound and every player had an open shot but they
couldn’t find the bottom of the net. The
first half defense was led by Samantha Surowiec,
Marissa Doherty, Victoria Mirabito, and Julia Kelly
who all did an outstanding job keeping the game close. Since Tewksbury’s shots weren’t falling they
were lucky to go into half time with a 10-10 tie. The Salem guards came out strong in the
second half and scored the bulk of their points and they managed to build a
solid lead. The Redmen
once again had to come from behind but this seems to get them motivated and
their leading second half scorer, Sara Catanzano (6
points) began to dominate the game on both ends of the floor. The entire team dug in deep to play Tewksbury
Tough defense and with 4 minutes left to play both teams were into to foul
trouble which lead to 2 shots from the line for every foul that was
committed. Both teams also started their
full court press and it was the Redmen defense that
won this battle as Salem turned the ball over several times. With just 43 seconds remaining on the clock
it was Catanzanao who stepped to the line for 2 shots
to take the lead. She missed the first
one but hit nothing but net on the second to tie the game. With 24 seconds left Garcia stepped to the
line and sank one of her free throws to once again tie the game. The teams began to trade the lead back and
forth and this was the longest 43 seconds in the history of 5th
grade travel basketball. With 21 seconds
left Samantha Mercurio had her chance at the line and
she sank both of her shots keeping the Tewksbury’s hopes alive. This went on for what seemed to be an
eternity and for every Tewksbury point Salem answered back but the final blow
for Salem happened with 4.9 seconds on the clock. Sessa had 2 shots
from the line and wasn’t able to capitalize on either of them but on the second
shot Garcia grabbed the rebound and laid it in to give the Redmen
a 1 point lead. Salem now had 2 seconds
to try and regain the lead or to try and tie the game. They inbounded the ball and Tewksbury stole
it as time ran out. Tewksbury had just
won their second straight exciting game in a row and with this victory they are
now back to 500. The final score was 27
– 26 with Tewksbury on top thanks to their gritty defense and good foul
shooting.
